Background: The referral process for patients with critical conditions is an important part of health services that require quick, precise and accurate decisions, the speed of providing assistance to save lives and prevent disability requires effective coordination, and in-depth knowledge from health workers, especially nurses. Purpose: This is to explore the experience of nurses in making referrals for critical patients, at Maba Regional Hospital, East Halmahera Regency. Method: The research design used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected using in-depth interviews involving 10 participants who had made referrals for critical patients using the snowball sampling technique. Analysis of research data used the collaizi method. Results: Six themes were obtained, namely 1) Reasons for referrals for patients with critical conditions. 2) Nurses' readiness to make referrals for patients with critical conditions. 3) Nurses' competence in making referrals for critical patients. 4) Psychological and physical burdens of nurses in referring critical patients. 5) Challenges and obstacles in referring critical patients. 6) Nurses' expectations for institutional support. Conclusion: Nurses must always be ready to carry out referrals with various limitations and obstacles. Efforts to improve referral facilities and improve the competence of nurses by training nurses who carry out referrals need to be carried out in order to ensure patient safety and referral efficiency.
