Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a global health problem with a prevalence of 9.5% or approximately 850 million people, and is projected to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2040. Hemodialysis (HD) is the main therapy for CKD; however, it impacts the quality of life of patients physically, psychologically, socially, and environmentally. Objective: To determine the relationship between comorbid diseases and duration of hemodialysis with the quality of life of hemodialysis patients at Sentra Medika Hospital, North Minahasa. Methods: This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 140 respondents were selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. Data were collected using demographic questionnaires and the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) instrument. Results: Most respondents (95.0%) had comorbidities, 91.4% had undergone hemodialysis for <1 year, and 52.9% showed good quality of life. Chi-square test results indicated no significant relationship between comorbid diseases and the quality of life of hemodialysis patients (p = 0.601), and no significant relationship between the duration of hemodialysis and quality of life (p = 0.172). Conclusion: Patients with a greater number of comorbidities have a worse quality of life compared to patients with fewer comorbidities, while patients who have undergone hemodialysis for a longer period tend to have a better quality of life compared to those who have recently undergone hemodialysis.
